Marshall student Pete Gross said, "Everyone said we couldn't beat WVU. They said we were too small. Well, there won't be any smoke up in Morgantown today because there won't be any couches burning! The mighty Mountaineers got beat!"
This was the first time Marshall had ranked higher than WVU in The Playboy Party School Rankings and the Herd's first National Party School Championship. WVU has won "The Golden Beer Mug" seven times in the last decade.
Governor Earl Ray Tomlin said, "I'm very proud of both of these schools. They drank their hearts out and puked their guts up. They sacrificed a lot for this. Instead of studying they were out in bars. Twenty years from now when they are working at McDonalds because they drank their way out of college, they can remember the day they were the biggest drunks in the country."
WVU ranked number two in the Party School Championship. "The voting was so close that itthe championship came down to a quarter bounce game between a student from each school." Tommy Benson, the winning quarter bounce player, said, "This is the greatest moment in my life and to do it in my last game at Marshall is great. I'm flunking out this year so I'm going pro as a quarter bouncer. I can't wait for the draft. In fact, someone's pouring a pitcher of draft beer now. Time to chug!!"
Hundreds of schools compete each year for the dubiious honor, but only few are chosen.
