Depp said, "Out of nowhere my phone started ringing off the hook. My third cousin, Clyde who lives in Boone County, called me collect and said everyone in his holler was saying I was doing a movie on Jesco. People were being hired to work security detail and standing guard in front of a trailer I was supposedly living in! Even Jennifer Anniston called and wanted to know why I picked Demi Moore over her.
"Eventually I called my buddy Jesco White, who I have actually hung out with on many occasions. I couldn't understand a word he was saying because he was laughing so hard. The bottom line is that little article on The Diggerer got a lot of attention at my expence."
As to whether there was any possible truth to the rumor, "No, the answer is no. For now, anyway. There is no movie in the works starring me as Jesco. Not that I wouldn't be up for it, few people know Jesco like I do. And, I'm always attracted to stories about the 'odd man out'. So if any writer wants to take a shot at a script, I'm your man."
Depp says he is sorry that so many people were fooled by the article. He said he is angry with The Diggerer for fooling his fans and will never grant The Diggerer any interviews. Depp said, "What does 'The Diggerer' mean anyway. Is it some insane reference to West Virginia's coal industry?"
"I'm sorry he feels that way," said Arthur P Coodle, editor and owner of The Diggerer. "We always try to connect with anyone before running a controversial story such as this. Alligator Jackson promised me he got a clear, 'Whatever' from someone that may have been Depp's personal assistant -- or gardner. He couldn't be sure. 'Whatever' in my book is always a green light to run a story. Everyone knows it's shorthand for 'Whatever you'd like to do, is fine with us.'"
