The story of Princess Falling Rock, is one such example.
In the 1670's the Princess was the daughter of Chief Running Water, a local hero and avid water skier. Other than being known for his love of the great outdoors and extreme sports, the Chief was known for his complete and utter obsession with his daughter Falling Rock. When the Princess became of marriageable age, Chief Running Water tried to trap her in one of the many caves in the area we now know as Gauley Mountain to keep her to himself and away from the other 99% which he felt were not good enough for the Princess. Of course, the Princess was able to escape, since it was a cave and by definition has an opening somewhere, and ran away never to be seen again.
Chief Running Water (not being the type to give in easily) spent the rest of his years forcing his tribe to make signs alerting fellow tribes and travelers through the area to "Watch for Falling Rock". Though the Princess was never found, the signs endured, and entire generations of American Indian tribes spent their days making signs to appease the dead Chief to keep him from returning from the after life to hunt his daughter himself.
Pure appalachian superstition keeps locals making new signs year after year to inform the inhabitants to "Watch for Falling Rock".
