BECKLEY- Ben Weston is wondering what went wrong.  Suddenly, and without explanation his best friend of seven years turned on him. Ben's father always told him "girls will come and go, but friends are forever."  Ben's best friend, however, turned him into the police and that was a bitter pill to swallow.  Ben's best friend is Halo, a German Shepherd.

Ben and Halo were driving back from a trip to Florida where Ben picked up 4000 Oxycodone and 1500 Xanex pills.  Weston decided to pull over and walk Halo before going home to sort out the drugs to sell on the Beckley Black Market.

While on the walk Halo jerked away from Weston and approached two West Virginia State Patrol officers and began barking excitedly. He ran to the car and back to the officers several times until they followed him.  At the car Halo jumped up, placed his front paws on the trunk and gave a sharp, "Bark!" -- as if giving an order.

The officers asked Weston if he minded opening the trunk.  Knowing the gig was up, he did so.  The offiers easlily found the pills and read Weston his rights, placing him in custody.

Officer Mike Gatlin said, "We never would have suspected a thing. We were talking to motorists when Halo approached us. He scared me at first because of his size but he kept twisting his head back to the car like he wanted us to follow him. I watched Lassie every week as a kid and it just reminded me of Lassie trying to get help when little Timmy fell in the well.

"When we found the pills we didn't know what to think.  I'm sure Mr. Weston felt betrayed -- I kinda felt sorry for him.  We are proud of Halo.  He knew his owner committed a crime and he was doing his part as a good citizen -- even if he is furry and has four feet."

When Weston spoke to us, he said, "That's one stupid dog.  Everyone thinks he was telling the cops about my drugs, but he wasn't.  I locked up his favorite toy in the truck and he wanted the officers to get it out.  He knows I call the cops whenever I lock my keys in my car and I taught him how to call 911 for emergencies.  That was no biggie, either - it's only two digits.  Now he's homeless.  Stupid dog!  I'm really gonna miss him in jail!"

Sargent Mike Barren of The West Virginia Highway Patrol said Halo is being rewarded for his good deed.  The German Shepherd is going to get a chance to become a Police Dog.  He will enter special training courses next week to become a member of The West Virginia State Police K-9 Unit.

Who's a good boy!?
