On the evening of September 12, 1952, the quiet lives of the people of Braxton County, West Virginia would be forever changed by the arrival of an otherworldly being like nothing ever before seen. Despite the testimonies of many sober witnesses, the mystery of what would become known as the  “The Phantom of Flatwoods” has never been solved. Whatever the answers, the things seen in the woods that night were by no means human, and according to descriptions...not of our known world.

Events unfolded in the late summer twilight when three boys witnessed a glowing orb descend from the sky and come to rest on the wooded property of Mr. G. Bailey Fisher. The boys immediately ran to retrieve the mother of the two older boys and persuaded her to accompany them into the woods to investigate. As they set off, they were soon joined by two other neighborhood boys and a local member of the W.V. National Guard, as well as the enlisted man’s dog.

As the group made their way into the deepening woods, the dog made a bold dash ahead, snarling and barking protectively. Within moments he returned, tail tucked and whining in fear. Growing ever more uneasy, the flashlight-wielding friends moved on, the dog less spirited but by their side.

Upon arriving at the hilltop of Mr. Fisher’s property, they became aware of a dense mist  that began to burn their eyes and nostrils. It was at that moment that they spotted a glowing red orb merely fifty feet away. Surely this was what they had seen descend from the sky! A loud, unearthly hissing sound from their left caused them to swing their flashlights in that direction, and it was at this point that they saw what had escaped from the orb.

flatwoods-monsterDescribed by all members of the party as “ten feet tall, with a glowing red face and green clothing”, the hissing abomination glided toward them with shocking speed, flailing it’s claw-like hands as if to grasp one of the children. Seeing this dreadful creature charging toward them, the group was overtaken by instinct, and fled the woods in mindless panic.

After reporting these events to authorities, an investigation was launched and other witnesses came forward, stating that they, too, had encountered the creature and seen the orb. A local doctor who treated one of the party for an illness that struck shortly after the incident stated that the victim appeared to have suffered exposure to “mustard gas”. Speculations have included everything from alien visitation to secret military operations to people simply frightened by a barn owl. As time reveals all things, eventually humanity will know what was really lurking in Mr. Fisher’s woods that night, but until that day, the Phantom of Flatwoods remains a mystery.
